Holey May

Hi friends!

Since we've spoken last, we've had a few life events.  Some planned, some unplanned!

First, Xavier made his first communion followed by a lovely Mother's Day.  The kids got me some lotion and when Ellie sees me use it she points to her hand and makes a noise. I then give her a blob in her hand and she rubs it so cutely!

Xavier's quilt finally got finished and now Ellie likes to climb on his bed and read herself a book  .This day she was learning about our 50 states.

Here she is celebrating Memorial Day with fork and cup in hand.  The girl eats!  I would not have believed it 6 months ago if you told me how much of a good little eater she would become.  I have to say once again how grateful we are to not have to attend that program for feeding issues. I pray the families that do attend have success when they get finished.

Trying a homemade croissant.  Yes there was alot of butter that went into the dough.  Yes it was sublime.  Yes I had four.

Then our little Julia just tripped and fell in the house yesterday evening.  She cut her forehead open pretty badly.  It was a definite trip to the ER so as we began gathering shoes, calling grandma and applying pressure, Ellie plopped herself right in the middle of all of it and began crying out of concern for Julia and being bothered by all the noise and intensity. The boys then lovingly took Ellie into their bedroom with them and tried to calm her down while we got Julia situated.  Three hours later she was all stitched up and today she's doing great.  Ellie was so happy to have Julia back at home and happy that her little bedtime routine was back in place tonight.

I guess you could say with Julia's gash in her head...she was Holey Julia for a day.  Let's hope we're all as Holy as we can be every day.

May 1st

This is big huge gigantic monumental.  Today we removed Ellie's feeding tube from her stomach.

Just shy of three years in her body, that thing came out. It was pretty uneventful, done at the home thanks to some teaching we got in the hospital.  But what an important event it was.

She had a heart ultrasound today which was what we were waiting for to make sure she was doing well before we removed it.  This appointment followed a regular check up where her weight gain was outstanding - up several pounds from that rough start we had with the transition to eating.  The appoinment was set months ago for May 1st and I thought it my mind, "Ha, May 1st...the present".

The middle of December 2011 marked transition between "before knowledge" and "after knowledge.  After we gained the knowledge at that ultrasound, things didn't make any sense.  Being a very visual person, I searched to come up with something to let my brain "rest" on.  In the middle of wrapping presents later that day, I decided I was going to need a reminder that the baby was a gift.  A gift from God that he'd chosen especially for our family.

I found an empty little box and wrapped it up and put a label on it.
Ellie's due date was May 1st and until that day came, I would have to trust God in his infinite wisdom with the gift he had willed for us.  That box sat in a prominent place in our house and spoke to me to wait, trust and let go.

Today as I took this picture Ellie swooped in and grabbed the box from the table.  Apparently she did not read the label and thought it was her birthday all over again.

Luckily I salvaged it.  If I had to list 10 material things that had the most meaning to me, this little box would be on that list.

So here we are...three and a half years later.  We're taking her tube out on this day, so much to celebrate.  Inside that box there are many things to celebrate.  This is the kind of gift that just keeps on giving!!!

Birthday Misc.

A few extra photos from the birthday celebration. Ellie seems to love being three and we all enjoy calling her a three year old!  3 is so big!

A special surprise for the other three kids - Ellie got tickets to go see "Curious George", the play at the theater!  She was so happy to sit in her seat - she had a fun time trying to keep it from closing up on her!

This next thing doesn't really fit anywhere but I wanted to share it.  This is a cabinet in our house that once housed nine large boxes.  The boxes were brought to us by a friend only weeks after we moved in to the house.  Remember that the move occurred when Ellie was 6-weeks old, right in the middle of two hospitalizations.  This friend had bought a "Pre-K" home education cirriculum and when her plans changed, she no longer needed it.  She generously came by the house and donated the boxes to us.  When she left I wondered if I could use them for then 5 year old Xavier and 2 year old Julia.  While forming that thought I'm sure I heard some sort of beeping on Ellie's machines and ran to tend to that.  So the boxes found their way into this cabinet and there they stayed - for two years.  Last fall with Julia as an eager-to-learn 4 year old, we pulled those boxes out one by one and had quite the time with those lessons.  Xavier, then 7 was more than happy to participate in the wonderful crafts and lessons and it was a real blessing to our family.

I just pulled our last box out of the cabinet today.

How the cabinet now looks.  It's amazing how melancholy this has made me.  It seems that when anything that relates to that raw, difficult time in our lives comes to an end - it takes me back to that moment then I'm flung right back into the present realizing the time that has passed.  Instead of "empty nest" I guess you could call this feeling "empty cabinet".

3 means goodbye

Ellie's third birthday triggered an end to a program she's been in....her whole life!

Three years minus about four days ago...two people visited our house and one lady called on the phone.  Now both of those things that began long ago are coming to a close.

If there's one thing evvvverybody tells you to do when you have a child with developmental delays, it's "sign up for an early intervention program".  Ours in town is called "Babies Can't Wait".  You are encouraged to sign up while still pregnant so I did and had all that lined up.  The good/bad of that is they want to start helping you right away by coming to your house and asking you 27 million questions about the baby you've only known for a few days and how could you know anything when you're only on chapter two of the Handbook for Families with a Child with Down syndrome.

So Jeff took the kids out of the house and I sat through  the whole intake process.  Shortly after that, we began to get visits from therapists to work on things like rolling over.  Except soon after we started, Ellie was in no position to roll over.  Hard to do when you have tubes coming out of you and you keep falling asleep.  But the therapists came anyway and did little things like let her chew on a little plastic device for oral stimulation, etc.  Through the years there were were funding issues and staff issues so it wasn't always consistent.  Until about nine months ago.  At that time we were assigned a therapist who stuck with us the whole way and worked on Ellie's fine motor skills and oral exercises. She was a terrific fit for our family and we loved the days she came.

Patricia came to our house every other week and brought puzzles, balls, electric toothbrushes, games, toys, whipped cream for Ellie to play with, crafts and various other "gimmicks" as she called them to get Ellie to do the hard work she was tasked with.  She had a special little helper each visit - a cute little 5-year-old little girl who let her in the door every week :).  When Patricia started with us, Ellie was neither walking nor eating.  She worked on both things and by the time we had our last visit last week, Ellie was like a different child!

We had a little celebration with cupcakes and we all cheered when Ellie blew out her own candles.  Then it was really neat to watch her eat with someone that appreciates all she's accomplished.  The kids and myself were cheering and then there was this other person in the house that was also so happy and celebrating too...it made it feel like she was part of the family too!  I love that the program came to our home.  It was really wonderful.

Here is Ellie and Patricia whom she reached for upon arrival every week.

As far as why kids get "discharged" at 3 years old - the program assumes you will then enroll your child into the public school system and receive services/therapy there. All the staff I've met with both in these programs as well as in the school system (amazingly the coordinator goes to our church!), all agree that the home can continue to be an environment in which Ellie learns, grows and thrives.  I think it's fair to say her siblings have been paying attention over the years to all the tricks of the trade.  I see them doing exercises on their own like encouraging Ellie to kick a ball around the room.

We'll miss Patricia and we thank her for her dedication to our family and her big kind heart!

The other relationship ending is a representative we were assigned through our insurance company to sort through some of our medial concerns/questions/billing issues.  It was this same week of coming home from the hospital and adjusting that we got a phone call.  For some reason on this day it was just me at home with the kids.  I answered the phone and a woman identified herself but I totally missed what she said.  You know how those first few seconds of a phone call be be foggy?  Then she said something like "I want to explain what I do - do you have about 15 minutes for this phone call?"  I heard that.  But what I actually processed was: "Can you manage your four children while rounding up enough brain cells to have this important conversation right now?"  I politely asked her if we could do it another time and she was great about it.  Later when we re-connected I was happy to learn that if you have a baby who racks up a large amount of medical bills just by taking their first breath, you get your very own insurance agent you can email and call directly with pretty much any question.  Oh and she's also a registered nurse.  Score.  This lady knew everything about Ellie and in a short time knew everything about our family. She was awesome.  We must have talked more than 100 times.  We'd talk every day for a few minutes during the hospitilizations - she wanted to know everything happening.  Partly to communicate to her superiors what was "coming down the pike" in terms of expenses but she really really cared about Ellie and steered us toward/away from things several times during hard decisions.  She was one of the ones that encouraged me to "embrace the tube" for feeding in the beginning :).

The other week she suprised me right after we'd talked about Ellie's success with eating when she notified me our time together had to end.  Because of  Ellie's "non critical" state, we'd be going back in the main pool of people who have to dial a 1-800 number for insurance questions.  In fact, she said applying for the feeding program was really the last thing she was told she could do for us and when Ellie started eating we dropped that whole thing.

So I thanked her tremendously (I thought we'd have her forever!) and we said bye.  It's a weird ending.  Weird to be "dependent" on someone then not need them anymore!  Plus she was nice and made me laugh.  Sniff.

Well, as people have come and gone over these three years (there have been a FEW!), one person has stayed with us all this time.  That's our little Ellie - the center of all this fuss.  So many people have cared about her and have jumped into our lives.  Then they jump out because she's doing better.

I guess that's the definition of a "Happy Ending".

Birthday Girl!!!

Ellie is 3!  We're just so thankful she's doing so well and to think of what has happened in three years...there are no words to summarize the changes we've ALL experienced!

So to celebrate, the six of us went to a local fish restaurant where they have the whole restaurant sing and Ellie just got a huge kick out of it.  She ate her fish and hush puppies and then had her own Moon Pie to herself!  What a fun time she had.

Enjoy watching!

And then when we got home, Ellie got a taste of playing in the rain!  Click on the words to see Ellie hesitant about her fist time being in the rain!

Easter!

Happy Easter everyone!

Ellie had a wonderful Easter, she participated so much!  She's had a few tastes of candy here and there but what she really enjoyed the most is putting eggs in her basket!

Here is the happy girl after Mass.

Ellie filled up her basket then stayed very busy sorting through all the treasure!  She walked around the whole yard then sat on the porch.  (video of walking will come eventually - she might be running soon!)

Then a slow week of adjusting back to school after spring break.  Ellie found herself in her favorite spot to watch PBS in the mornings during lessons.  If we're lucky, she stays put more than five minutes!

Stay tuned for the birthday photos!  The BIG THREE this week!!!!!

Plungers and Shoes

Ellie would like to say hello to you today, but she's made herself disappear!

Speaking of disappearing, here is what's left of some syringes we had for Ellie's feedings.  And below is "the basket" that carried around a cloth, syringe and the days' milk. One day we took her out to Walmart and in the car found this white funny looking piece of plastic.  We didn't know what in the world it was so we threw it in the Walmart garbage can.  Later realizing what it actually was (one of the handle decorative pieces), we decided it'd be best not to dig in Walmart's trash cans for it.

A lonely syringe with no purpose in life (other than to be recycled) and Ellie with a long future of eating ahead of her!

Before getting recycled, the syringes did find another use.  Julia and Xavier made them a part of their battle with foam swords.

They then became plumbers and fixed some toilets around the house.

Xavier stopped for a minute to layout another quilt - this time it's his.  Ellie couldn't be around for this one like she "helped" with the last one.  She'd have a heyday with this all these pieces!

Then it was time for Ellie to get some new shoes that fit just right for her!  No hand-me-downs for the new walker!

The even had face painting at the store that day - what fun!

Weight for it...

Ellie gained two pounds in two weeks!!!  After that stomach virus, she got back to eating and made up for lost time!  She got her strength back and I am happy to say she's eating a ton and I also can share - she's a former crawler!  As in, she walks all the time now!  I wish I had some pictures to share but I didn't take any this week. I do promise a video soon of her walking - how does that sound? :)

Anyway, we celebrated her great weight with a trip to Target, just the two of us. I needed a few household things and since I never get to go in that store any more I was excited I thought of it as we left her nearby appointment.  As I got Ellie out of the van it hit me all the history I've had with this store in 10 years.  In fact, when child number one, two and three were first born - it was my "go to" place to get out of the house. I never knew if I needed anything when I went there.  I just knew if I got inside and got a large bag of popcorn with two extra bags to split it up, I could actually form a coherent thought to actually determine if and what I actually did need.  There were also the days I would go there with grandparents to buy the kids a new toy when a sibling was born.  And of course when it was just Jacob and I - I had all the time in the world to stroll the aisles.  I ate all of the popcorn.

But when Ellie was born, there were no Target trips.  Come to think of it, there was always a nurse on the cardiac floor that popped popcorn for a late night snack that we all got to smell.  On lucky days, they would burn it.  Anyway, Ellie and I had to wait almost three years but she and I finally had our moment at Target last week.  I carried her in on my hip - also rare since the fourth child is always a stroller child.  I then got her buckled into one of those gigantic red carts.  Target must think their shoppers have either over-sized purses or want to put their 8-year-olds in the cart seat. I put Ellie and my average sized purse in the front part of the cart and off we went - but I had brought goldfish which made her perfectly happy.  She'll try the popcorn next time.  She was quiet and happy and we had 30 minutes of peace and enjoyment together.  And I never had any weird thoughts about what we "missed" those first few years, etc.  I was totally in the moment and it felt so great. I don't know if it was the high from her weight gain, being out of the house with just one child, or feeling that sweet feeling you get when you have a little baby that you can tote around and take places.  Whatever it was, we enjoyed ourselves.

God bless you all!!!

And more food

Floating around in my head is a timeline of Ellie's eating journal.  If you'll humor me and allow me to use this venue for documenting her eating history, I will reward you with cute pictures at the bottom. Or, just skip to the bottom :).

12/21/14 - Ellie swallows a bite of food, by accident!  The following few days are filled with excitement and amazement as she eats for the first time.

12/24/14 - She gets a cold that stops her interest and willingness to eat all together

1/11/15 - Begins to eat again and is happy about it

1/16-18/15 - A trip out of town with a mix of some feedings in her tube for security and some great eating "on the go"

1/18/15 - Last feeding in the tube (in our car coming home which she later threw up because she had snacked so much on the drive)

1/23/15 - Weight check at pediatrician to get a baseline of her eating all by mouth

2/16-20/15 - Ellie gets a nasty stomach bug but amazingly she is a trooper with drinking her water and still taking bites of food

2/19/15 - Weight check right at the end of the virus and she lost quite a bit presumably due to the waste she was putting out

2/20/15-current - Increasing calories as much as possible while still trying to stay healthy.  She now seems to have a new cold, this time the stuffy nose kind.  Ultimately this is good to show she can hydrate herself but the momentum of the weight gain must continue in the next couple of weeks.

We go back in another week or so, so all the prayers you can throw out for Ellie to gain, gain, gain would be great, great, great!!!

Ellie feeds herself a bowl of cereal.

Pancakes for "Mardi Gras" - I made extra just in case!

She ate 5 whole pancakes!!!!

She ate all this for lunch the other day - mashed potatoes with heavy cream, peanut butter and a whole banana.

This weekend we have some calories planned thanks to a certain terrific 7-year-old turning 8 so hopefully by next week she'll put some numbers on the board.

Bon Appetit everyone!

Food!!!

Hi everyone!

This update is for those of you that have a little time on your hands!  It's some videos of Ellie eating!

I recorded the videos for two purposes - one to show all our Ellie friends what a good little eater she has become!  Secondly, the wonderful place that was going to help Ellie called and we had a lot to talk about!  They were extremely helpful in taking information over the phone and they were more than happy to conclude...Ellie no longer needs the program!!!  What a dream that phone call was!  These videos were shot to help them see her chewing, etc.

You'll love seeing her eat - when you have the time to watch!  They are each about 2:00-5:00 minutes in length.

Going back in time a bit, here is Ellie watching the Super Bowl.  Her outfit was gifted to her by a certain Patriots fan aunt :).
"All we're doing is watching t.v.  You people said there would be pizza."

"There we go, thank you very much!"

 She liked it alot!!!

A cute little outfit for church.

Ellie found a good seat to watch a t.v. show :).

Ellie was interested in the sewing machine!

That's right Ellie, push it through!

Thank you for your continued support and prayers about the food.  So far so good...for sure!!!
