K-cals measure the amount of energy produced by food. The amount of calories in food is the same as the total number of k-cals.
This is the hour long discussion we just had with the doctors. Ellie is on so many meds that pull fluid off her lungs and on top of that she burns so many calories just to breathe and circulate blood that she literally could start to get too weak to grow. We've been avoiding giving her artificial fortifying at this point since I've been able to produce so much milk so we're hopeful we can still do that. I finally had to admit to the doctors that it's very confusing to me why she can't just "grow" with all the good milk she's getting.
So that is what we are tweaking today - how to feed her, how much to feed and if we need to add anything to it. So they want to give her some time in the regular room to show how she grows. They say early Thursday morning if they are happy with what they see, we can go home.
